1. Substance abuse: do not use alcohol, tobacco (smoking or chewing), or illegal drugs.
2. Conduct: an athlete/activity participant must be in good standing with administrators, teachers, sponsors, coaches, team, organization and laws of the community. Emotional control and sportsmanship must be displayed at all times.
* Classroom Detentions: Because the type of detention, reason for the detention, and length of the detention vary, each detention will be dealt with by the coach, sponsor and administrator. Consequences might include, but would not be limited to, extra work during practice, activity suspension, or dismissal from the team or organization. Students who receive multiple classroom detentions may receive more severe consequences. Note: The coach or sponsor has the discretion to impose compensatory measures as additional punishment.
* Office Referrals During the Season of Sport/Activity:
1st Referral = Warning
2nd Referral = Suspension from the next competition/activity
3rd Referral = Suspension from the next two competitions/activities
4th Referral = Dismissal from the team (balance of season)/organization (6 weeks or balance of semester, whichever is longer)
* Suspensions of Any Type During the Season of Sport/Activity:
1st Suspension = Suspension from the next competition/activity
2nd Suspension = May result in dismissal from the team (balance of season)/organization (6 weeks or balance of semester, whichever is longer) or extended suspension
3rd Suspension = Dismissal from the team (balance of season)/organization (6 weeks or balance of semester, whichever is longer
* Harassment: Harassment of any type will not be tolerated by the coaches, sponsors or the administration. Students involved in harassment may be dismissed from the team or organization.
* Absences:
If participating in, or attending an activity outside the school day, a student must attend school at least four Mods the day of the activity. If participating in an activity during school hours, a student must attend school at least four Mods the previous day. Exceptions to these rules may be arranged with the principal in advance. This rule applies to practices/meetings as well.
“Sleeping in” or missing an entire day after a competition/activity is not permitted and is unexcused.
Absences from practice or meeting may be excused if the reason is illness, injury accompanied by a doctor’s note, family emergency, doctor’s appointment, school trip or receiving academic assistance during practice or meeting. Playing/participation time may be reduced because of lost practice/meeting time even though it is excused.

Absences for Out of School Suspensions will be addressed by the coach and administrator. Consequences outlined in this section will be considered the minimum possible punishment.
Tardies to practice or meetings will be handled at the discretion of the coach or sponsor.
Repeated violations may result in administrative intervention.
3. Safety: KSHSAA regulations and school rules must be followed at all times.
4. Appearance and grooming: athletes/activity participants are representatives of our school and community and must make an effort to give a good appearance.
a. Hair, including facial hair, must be kept clean and in a style which will not require your attention during practices, meetings, games. competitions or activities.
b. Dress for trips must be appropriate for the situation and will be announced by the coach or sponsor in charge.
c. Uniforms must be worn neatly.
5. Transfers between sports in the same season are not permitted. If an athlete desires to change sports after the beginning of a season, that athlete must wait until the following year to transfer. The only exception to this policy will be if a squad is reduced, then a transfer may be granted, or if it is early in the season and /or both head coaches are in agreement that the transfer would be beneficial to the athlete.
6. Fredonia High School athletic letter jackets are earned and approved for purchase through the coaches and administration. Other school letter jackets may be worn by the student who earned the jacket. The graduation year, the student’s name and any patch for a team placing in the top 8 in state, substate championship, substate runnerup or league championship, individual state championship patches are allowed on the letterjacket and will be ordered by FHS at the student’s expense.
7. Violations:
The following infractions by an athlete/activity participant would be considered major violations and will result in consequences:
A. use or possession of tobacco;
B. use or possession of alcoholic beverages;
C. use or possession of drugs;
D. stealing or other illegal activities;
E. use of steroids;
F. huffing;
G. any action that results in revocation of the KSHSAA/FHS/FMS “Student in Good Standing” status. A student is in good standing when he/she has not violated any rules contained within the FHS/FMS student or KSHSAA handbook. When violations occur, the status is liable to revocation.
Penalties: OFFENSES SHALL BE CUMULATIVE WITHIN ONE YEAR OF THE FIRST OFFENSE
First Offense: Temporary suspension from competition/activity
The student will be held out of 50% of the games/contests/competitions that are left to be played/attended. Suspensions shall begin immediately and games/contests/competitions missed shall be consecutive from that point. At the time of this notification, the parent(s) and/or guardian(s) will be requested to attend a conference with the principal, athletic director, (athletes only), and coach or sponsor to determine a course of action to prevent further infractions. It will also be recommended that the student receive any necessary counseling as determined by the principal, athletic director (athletes only), parents, and coach.
Second Offense: Dismissal from the team
The student will lose eligibility for the rest of that sport/competition/activity season. A conference will be set up to determine the eligibility of the student for other activities for the remainder of the school year.
Third Offense: Suspension from all sports/activities for one year. Explanation: If a violation occurs at the end of the season, or between sport seasons, the student will perform school service, public service, or any other punishment as deemed acceptable by the principal, athletic director, parent, and head coach or sponsor. That punishment will be equivalent to the in-season punishment for the same offense. This punishment must be completed before the student can represent the school in extra-curricular activities, advance in good standing to another grade, or receive their diploma.
Confirmation of violation: The athlete/activity participant must be observed by a coach, teacher, staff member, parent, or administrator of USD #484 or be arrested and charged by law enforcement officials to be in violation of the above rules. All reported violations will be investigated by the coaching staff/sponsor(s) and/or administrators. A student’s admission of a violation, witnessed by an administrator, coach, sponsor or parent will result in any of the disciplinary action(s) listed above and the fact that the student has self-admitted before the policy violation was discovered in any other manner shall be considered. Self-admission will not be accepted after the student has been notified that a violation has been confirmed. The student may appeal suspension by presenting a written request to the principal within one week following the notification of temporary suspension.
